The saying dynamite comes in small packages aptly and succinctly describes the story of one talented athlete Melissa Makanyire of Gaerezi Secondary school deep in the farming area of Nyanga District. With a not to big stature, the talented girl fits right into the adage.

Mellisa comes from a humble peasant family that subsists to erk a living. She has been a shining star since she was in primary school and has been to National and Regional competitions when she was both at Primary and Secondary levels.

Not only does she participate in these athletics competitions, she actually excels in them. She has held the Gold Medal in the 1500m middle distance event for 3 years in a row at Provincial and National levels.

In 2018 she participated in the same event representing Zimbabwe at the COSSASA meet in Francis Town, Botswana and she was 3rd in the field that included talented athletes from the famous Botswana and South African schools and academies.

Her performance at this year’s event in Gweru was a polished one that saw her landing 2 individual and 2 Team gold medals. Melissa’s talent supersedes the ordinary and she has surely scaled greater heights considering that her talent is still raw and yet to be developed further. It is that talent that needs to be tapped, natured and developed the more . Appreciation hoes to the effort her school coaches and school Headmistress Mrs. Mureyani have put in her career thus far.

Adopting a High Performance training regime will surely see the girl attain greatness and see her qualify for bigger stages at Regional and World meets like the world Junior championships and the Olympics.

With enough support, Mellisa will always scale great heights.
