The biting economic problems facing Zimbabwe have completely incapacitated the Registrar General’s Passports Department as they have completely stopped producing passports or taking any new applications.
News has been awash of reports that the Passport backlog had gone past 26000 with officials stating anonymously that the department was facing gross shortage of foreign currency that is required in the procurement of spares and consumables that include passport paper.
Registrar General, Mr Clement Masango wasn’t clear on when his office would resume the printing of passports as he argued that there was a system malfunction, an assertion that was dismissed by insiders in the department who required anonymity. The Registrar could not specify when the problem would be resolved.
