The old man Abdelaziz Bouteflika aged 82 , who was Algeria’s President had been in power for 20 years. He has resigned due to subsequent protests which began on 16 February 2019 ten days after Abdelaziz Bouteflika announced his candidacy for a fifth presidential post. The army chief of staff, Gaid Salah, demanded that he be declared unfit and leave office.

The 82-year-old was declared incapable of performing his obligations.
He suffered a Stroke 6 years ago and has infrequently appeared in public since then.

Leaders of the smile revolution had denied Mr Bouteflika’s proposal to pull from power by the end of his current term – 28 April.

The demonstrations have also led to calls for the entire political system, in which the military plays an important role, to be overhauled.
Abdelaziz Bouteflika stepping down from power brought sparking jubilant celebrations in the streets.
