Artisanal gold miners commonly referred to as Makorokoza in some spheres, are up in arms over the deduction of 25% of their gold produce at Shurugwis Lulu 2 mines and Wanderer mine that are believed to have been offered to Shurugwi residents by Falcon Gold mine, as part of its broad based community empowerment drive.
The miners claim a firm or organization that purports to operate as SHURUGWI DISTRICT Development Trust is behind this scheme in cahoots with a custom miller at Surprise where all ores produced at Lulu 2 and Wanderer are process for gold milling.
“The founders or members of this organization are unknown and whose benefit they serve is not clear.Their remittances to Government coffers through Zimra are not known since some militia mane the ores from the extracting sites to the processing plant.
As youths we have no options but to have this deduction effected on us by these powerful guys whose identity is unknown to us.The composition of the board is not known nor was there an official launch done yet we are having 25% of our gold produce levied for unknown purposes.”The youths who requested not to be named said a powerful cartel was behind the scheme for personal gain.”It all started last September when the site became a gold boom and we began to be levied. The former Mp of this area facilitated for youth claims and we never ceded a dollar to him or his proxies who we worked with as consortia. We labored and grossed all we made maybe it’s a paradigm shift in the modus operandi of Falgold Mines to levy us indirectly via an unknown investment vehicle “.
The youths say there is rampant segregation at the site and only those aligned to a certain individual are allowed to work at the site.
A visit at the sites could draw the sight of security personnel in red work suits manning the sites with books in hand.
“We want to engage the authorities over this for the levy is too high.Remember 90% of gold ore is lost during milling process. These guys are getting rich on our sweat for its unheard of in the land kumhurwa meaning having a statutory deduction imposed .Is this legal or not we may be illiterate but this is a heinous act on us,” lamented one of the miners.
However efforts to reach the purported founders of the organization hit a snag due to the ownership complexity of the structure.
” We shall engage relevant offices on this issue, ” lamented one youth. The youths though angry have no where to go but there seem to be working up from their slumber.
